A Hearthstone company - serving Bridgewater, NJ

Gelco Fireplace Services Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

How Gelco Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

  • Gelco Pre-Fab wood-burning fireplaces - The refractory panels in the firebox develop hairline cracks after 15-20 seasons of Bridgewater’s freeze-thaw cycles. We see this most often in the Martinsville and Finderne areas, where older colonials run their fireplaces hard through January and February. We replace with OEM-matched panels or, when Gelco has discontinued the series, fabricate equivalent refractory from HeatShield Cerfractory Foam - rated to 2,050°F and documented with before-and-after photos.
  • Gelco gas log sets (GL-24 and GL-30 series) - The pilot assembly collects silica dust from Bridgewater’s clay-heavy soil, which tracks in on boots and settles in the burner orifice. Symptoms: pilot lights but main burner won’t sustain, or a lazy orange flame where you once had blue. We disassemble, clean the orifice with a numbered drill set (never a wire brush, which oval the bore), and test gas pressure at the manifold. If the thermopile has dropped below 325 mV under load, we replace it with an OEM Robertshaw or White-Rodgers unit - not a universal kit that fits “most” brands.
  • Gelco fireplace inserts (Model 41 and 44 wood inserts) - The bypass damper linkage seizes from creosote glazing, common when homeowners burn unseasoned oak from local tree services. The handle goes stiff, then snaps. We remove the insert (often a two-tech job in Bridgewater’s tight 1970s fireplaces), free the linkage on the bench, and replace worn clevis pins with stainless hardware. We also inspect the flex liner for corrosion at the collar - a Gelco-specific weak point where condensate pools.
  • Gelco chimney caps (stainless and galvanized lines) - The mesh spark arrestor on the 8″ and 10″ round caps clogs with catalpa and maple samaras, especially in neighborhoods near the Raritan River. This backs up smoke into the room and accelerates corrosion on the cap’s interior welds. We stock replacement Gelco caps, but often recommend upgrading to a stainless Famco cap with 5/8″ mesh and a lifetime warranty against perforation - a better value if you’re already paying for the service call.
  • Gelco direct-vent gas fireplaces (DV-36 and DV-42) - The glass gasket compresses after 8-10 years, allowing room air infiltration that fogs the glass and throws off the oxygen depletion sensor. Homeowners in Bridgewater’s hilltop homes (near Chimney Rock) notice this first on windy days. We replace the gasket with OEM braided ceramic, reset the glass to factory torque spec, and verify ODS shutdown at 18% oxygen with a calibrated analyzer. No guesswork - the printout goes in your file.

Our Gelco Fireplace Services Process

  1. 1
Call and schedule. A live person answers, 24 hours a day. We ask the model number (found on the rating plate, usually behind the lower louver or on the firebox side), the symptom, and how long it’s been happening. This lets our tech pull the correct manual before arriving.
  2. 2
Arrival and inspection. Our technician arrives in a marked truck, uniformed, and begins with a Level-2 camera inspection of the flue and firebox. You see the footage in real time. We document cracks, creosote buildup, or liner gaps with photos you can keep.
  3. 3
Diagnosis and upfront pricing. We explain what we found in plain English, show you the photos, and give a written estimate with one price - no line-item padding, no “plus materials” surprises. You approve before we touch a tool.
  4. 4
Repair with correct parts. We carry common Gelco OEM parts and quality aftermarket equivalents from our DuraFlex and HeatShield inventory. If your unit needs a discontinued part, we source through our wholesale network or fabricate an equivalent. We never substitute builder-grade hardware.
  5. 5
Testing and documentation. Gas units get combustion analysis and draft testing; wood units get a smoke-puff test and creosote depth measurement. We run the fireplace through a complete cycle while you watch.
  6. 6
Cleanup, guarantee, and follow-up. We lay drop cloths, vacuum with HEPA, and leave the hearth cleaner than we found it. Every job carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing - if it’s not right, we come back, no arguing. The chimney doesn’t lie. Neither do we.

What Gelco Fireplace Services Costs in Bridgewater

Service Typical Range What Moves the Price
Gas fireplace tune-up (pilot, burner, safety check) $189 - $275 Accessibility of the gas valve, need for thermopile replacement
Wood firebox refractory panel replacement $340 - $620 Number of panels, whether sides or back are cracked, OEM vs. fabricated
Insert bypass damper repair $285 - $450 Whether insert removal is required, liner collar condition
Direct-vent glass gasket and ODS service $195 - $310 Gasket material (braided ceramic vs. rope), analyzer calibration fee
Chimney cap replacement (Gelco or upgrade) $220 - $395 Stainless vs. galvanized, mesh size, flue count

These are Bridgewater-market ranges based on our last 24 months of Gelco jobs. Your exact price depends on what we find - which is why we don’t quote over the phone for repairs. The $89 Seasonal Tune-Up covers basic gas or wood fireplace inspection and cleaning; if we find a repair need, your tune-up fee applies toward the work. Call (908) 589-8342 for a free estimate - estimates are free, and there’s no obligation to book.

Why Bridgewater Homeowners Call Hearthstone Chimney Co. for Gelco Work

We’ve been answering the phone in this area since 1984 - long enough to remember when Gelco’s Model 30 insert was the standard installation in every new Bridgewater colonial. Russell Haines and our crew know which parts interchange between series, which factory bulletins to check for known defects, and when a “simple” repair is actually a symptom of a liner or draft problem. We document every inspection with photos and a plain-English verdict, back every job with the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing, and carry professional-grade materials from DuraFlex, HeatShield, Gelco, Olympia Chimney, Famco, and Copperfield - no hardware-store substitutes. Most jobs finish in one visit. A live person answers the phone, every hour of every day. We’ll be there when we say.
