Famco Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Famco Chimney Cap Installation: The Bridgewater Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Famco-compatible chimney caps for most flue configurations found in Bridgewater homes, with typical installed prices running $280-$520 depending on size, material, and whether your flue needs leveling or a custom fit. Most Famco cap replacements we book in Bridgewater are completed in a single visit, and we carry the common 8″×13″ through 13″×18″ stainless steel models on our trucks. Homeowners usually notice the problem after a storm, when water spots appear on the firebox floor, or when they spot the cap tilted or missing entirely from the driveway.

Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco produces several cap series, and the right match depends on what is currently on your chimney. The Original series uses a flat, bolt-on base plate with 1/4-inch stainless hardware, while the Wind Resistant line employs a deeper skirt and heavier-gauge mesh for properties near the Raritan River or other exposed spots in Bridgewater where nor’easters hit hard. If your existing cap has a Famco stamp on the collar, note whether the model number ends in -SS (all stainless) or -G (galvanized with stainless mesh). We do not recommend reusing galvanized bases in Somerset County; the freeze-thaw cycle here corrodes them inside of six years.

To identify your part before calling, measure the outside dimensions of your flue tile or crown, not the old cap itself. Famco caps are sized to overhang by 1.5 inches minimum. We also stock quality aftermarket equivalents from Gelco and Olympia Chimney that match Famco specs exactly and carry the same stainless warranty, often at a lower parts cost. We are an independent service provider with no affiliation to Famco; we simply specify what performs best for your flue and budget.

Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Is Failing

  • Water staining on firebox walls or hearth brick. The cap’s mesh has separated from its frame, or the base seal has cracked, letting Bridgewater’s driving rains run straight down the flue. In homes near the Duke Farms corridor, we see this most often after March ice storms.
  • Rust flakes or orange streaks on the chimney exterior. Galvanized Famco caps lose their zinc coating at the weld points first. Once rust starts, it accelerates through freeze-thaw; the cap is structurally compromised even if it still looks square from the ground.
  • Mesh sides pushed inward or detached. Squirrels and raccoons test every weak cap in Bridgewater’s mature neighborhoods. Famco’s 5/8-inch mesh is sturdy, but if the retention welds fail, animals will force an entry for nesting.
  • Cap sitting crooked or visible gap between base and crown. The original installer may have used generic wedge brackets instead of Famco’s matching base rail, or the crown itself has settled. A tilted cap channels water toward the flue instead of away.
  • Draft smoke or cold downdrafts when the fireplace is not in use. The cap’s baffle or wind skirt has bent or blown off. Famco’s Wind Resistant series uses a specific deflection angle; if that part is missing, your flue becomes a wind tunnel.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Component Price Range (Bridgewater)
Famco-compatible stainless cap, standard sizes $140-$220
Custom-fit or oversized (over 13″×18″) $220-$310
Labor, removal, and installation $140-$210
Crown leveling or sealant (if needed) $75-$150

The total installed price for most Bridgewater homes falls between $280 and $520. What drives the range: flue accessibility from the roof pitch, whether your crown needs fresh sealant to seat the new base properly, and whether we are matching a single flue or a multi-flue configuration. We quote the full number before booking, and that is the number on the invoice. The 90-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation, and the stainless cap itself carries a manufacturer’s warranty against corrosion or defect.

DIY or Call Us?

A homeowner can safely check whether the cap is present and roughly level from the ground with binoculars. You can also verify water stains inside the firebox and note any animal sounds.

We do not recommend climbing to remove or install a chimney cap yourself. The work requires proper roof harnessing, and a dropped cap from ridge height can damage siding or worse. More critically, an improperly seated cap creates a false sense of protection while water continues to enter. We have reinstalled more DIY caps in Bridgewater than we can count, usually because the base was not sealed or the wrong bracket size allowed uplift in the first strong wind. Our technicians carry the correct Famco and compatible bases, the sealant rated for 500°F flue temperatures, and the camera to confirm the flue interior is dry after installation.

Call (908) 589-8342 and we will walk through what you are seeing. If it sounds like a straightforward swap, we will quote it upfront and get you scheduled.
